Our Pedagogy Statement
At Little Woodlings Nursery, we believe that children learn best when they feel safe, secure, valued and truly known.
We are a small, welcoming nursery where all children learn together in one room, supported by a consistent team of four practitioners. We see our size as one of our greatest strengths. It allows us to know every child and family well, build strong relationships and provide care and learning that is genuinely individual to each child.
Relationships are at the heart of everything we do. Every practitioner knows every child — their personality, interests, strengths, routines, communication and individual needs. We create a warm, homely environment where children feel a strong sense of belonging and have the confidence to explore, play, communicate and learn.
We recognise that starting nursery is a significant experience for the whole family. We offer home visits and regular Stay and Play sessions to build relationships and familiarity before children start and throughout their time with us. We listen to parents, value their knowledge of their child and aim to support the whole family, not just the child.
Our pedagogy is centred around play, meaningful experiences and high-quality interactions. We follow children's interests while providing purposeful opportunities to introduce new knowledge, vocabulary and skills. Our practitioners observe carefully, know when to support and extend learning, and when to step back and allow children to develop their own ideas.
We have high expectations for every child and provide an inclusive and responsive approach, adapting our environment and practice to meet individual needs. We want every child to develop confidence, independence, resilience, curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.
As a nursery within a small rural community, we are proud of our strong sense of belonging and connection to the people and places around us. We take part in local community experiences and projects, such as Harvest Festival at our local church and events at the community hall, helping children understand that they are part of a wider community.
We are also fortunate to have an attached primary school, enabling us to support children through a close and fluid transition into their next stage of learning. We work closely with the school and families to ensure that children feel confident, secure and excited about their move to Reception.
Our consistent team works closely together, reflecting on children's development and adapting our practice to meet their changing needs. We believe that knowing children deeply enables us to provide the right support at the right time.
Ultimately, we want every child and family to feel:
“I am safe.
I am known.
I am listened to.
I belong here.
I can have a go.
I matter.”
We may be small, but we believe this enables us to provide something very special — a nurturing, homely setting where every child is genuinely known, every family is valued and every relationship matters.
It takes a community to nurture a child, and we are proud to be part of that community.
